Everything about Google Analytics

The _ga_* cookie

_ga_* is a cookie set by Google Analytics, from Google LLC. Distinguishes one visitor from another so repeat visits are counted as the same person.

The * in the name stands for a part that changes from site to site, such as an account or measurement ID.

400 days

Needs consent

Yes

Does the _ga_* cookie require consent?

_ga_* is used for analytics, so under the GDPR and the ePrivacy rules it may only be set after the visitor has agreed. Showing a banner is not enough on its own: the cookie must not be set before the visitor clicks accept.

Does your site set _ga_* before consent?

A free scan loads your site the way a new visitor sees it and lists every cookie that is set before anyone has said yes, _ga_* included.

How to put _ga_* behind consent

Remove the Google Analytics snippet from your site and add your Google Analytics ID under Integrations in Consentify instead. Consentify then loads Google Analytics only after the visitor has accepted analytics, so _ga_* is never set before consent.
